"Ana Agostino graduated as a Social Worker from the University of the Republic, Uruguay, did postgraduate studies at the University of Bremen, Germany, and completed her PhD in Development Studies at the University of South Africa (UNISA). She lived in South Africa for more than a decade working for several years with rural women through the Rural Development Forum and later with the Heinrich Boell Foundation in the areas of environment and development. In 2006 she moved back to Uruguay. She was Programme Analyst at the UNDP office responsible for the portfolio “Social cohesion and poverty reduction” and focal point on gender. As a consultant she wrote the Uruguay document that accompanied the 2011 Human Development Report entitled “Uruguay: Sustainability and Equity”; was the national consultant for the 2012 evaluation of the first National Plan on Gender Equality in Uruguay; coordinated the Uruguay national consultation on the post 2015 development agenda; and was responsible for mainstreaming gender in two GEF (Global Environment Fund) projects. In civil society, she worked for the International Council for Adult Education based in Montevideo as international coordinator of the Feminist Task Force of the Global Call to Action Against Poverty (2006-2011) and member of the Climate Change group following up the climate change negotiations from a gender and adult education perspective (2009-2011). In 2014 she was elected Ombudsperson for Montevideo, Uruguay, a post she held for five years, having introduced a gender policy in the institution and made policy recommendations to the departmental government in various areas (sanitation, sustainable public mobility, housing, agroecology, waste management, environmental pollution, accessible cities and democratisation of public spaces, non-discrimination, among others). She is a lecturer at University CLAEH (Uruguay) in the areas of Development, Culture and Human Rights and at FLACSO (Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences) in the areas of Gender and Environment. In 2022 she was Guest Lecturer at the Department of Development and Post-colonial studies at the University of Kassel, for the project “Towards a Reinvention of Development Theory: Theorizing Post-Development”
