Courses Overview

The MA in Mobility Studies uses English as its communication and teaching language. It is structured into a set of core units: general modules identify key subjects in mobility studies in the field of history and in the humanities, while the other modules offer a range of multidisciplinary courses from the social sciences and related subjects relevant to the field, such as global economic history; history of tourism; space, place and mobility; demography of migration; museums, collections and heritage; and European and global citizenship.

The MA in Mobility Studies has a strong identity that is unique in the national and international panorama and is based on advanced methodologies in historical and humanistic research, encompassing digital humanities and digital history. The aim of the programme is thus to train graduates to understand and contextualise the present challenges related to the various forms of mobility and to integrate this understanding with innovative analysis. Taught by experts from different fields across the humanities (history, geography, demography, anthropology and philology), social sciences and law, each module will familiarise students with multidisciplinary approaches to mobility studies.

The curriculum aims to develop the following specific skills:

  • to understand the modern phenomena of spatial, textual, material and social mobility in a historical perspective;
  • to analyse and integrate historical, geographical and cultural information, with special attention devoted to economic, social, political and environmental forms of mobility;
  • to develop career opportunities in the form of transferable skills and knowledge that will be useful in a wide variety of careers in international NGOs, local government and community organising; and
  • to apply the principles of global citizenship and sustainability (with reference to the objectives of the 2030 Global Agenda) with its historical, social, cultural, economic, political and environmental repercussions.
