To explore the tension and interplay between gender and conflict in European history, the International MATILDA Summer School 2026 aims to be a vibrant and interdisciplinary space for discussion, animated by some of Europe’s leading scholars in women’s and gender history. Through an intensive programme of lectures, research presentations, and workshops, participants will acquire new analytical tools to use gender as a fundamental interpretative lens for understanding the dynamics and consequences of political and social conflicts. In addition, we will examine how conflict has represented an extraordinary resource for the construction of freedom and self-determination in the history of women and genders.
Topics of discussion will include:
- Women’s work, networks, and struggles
- Women’s causes in the international arena
- Justice and courts as spaces for contesting gender roles
- Colonialism and contested bodies
- Women’s critiques of war and their actions for peace
