This international workshop brings together scholars from the fields of Syriac, Arabic, and Armenian studies to discuss the reception and translation of Aristotelian works and fragments. Particularly, it focuses on those works that are labelled as being produced by the Greek philosopher, but are rather Pseudo-Aristotelian or spurious. The workshop is organised as part of the ERC project FragArist (Funded by the European Union – Horizon EUROPE ERC-2021-STG Project n. 101041826). Therefore, it springs from the firm belief that Aristotelian fragments are crucial in understanding Aristotelian philosophy and its overarching impact on subsequent philosophical traditions, by shifting the focus from the philosopher’s best-known works to create a new understanding of Aristotle’s ideas. This approach needs to take into account the testimony provided by the West Asian reception of the philosopher’s works, encompassing Syriac, Arabic, and Armenian traditions. Such a broadening in the perspectives of investigation opens up the path for additional lines of enquiry, which are framed within the general aims of this workshop:

• to identify whether fragments attributed to Aristotle hide any lost Greek work of the philosopher;
• to reflect on why a work, a fragment, or a collection of sayings is attributed to Aristotle (instead of someone else);
• to map the presence of Aristotelian fragments or excerpts in Syriac, Arabic, and Armenian literatures;
• to map whether these fragments were translated on their own, or if they belonged to larger works and were translated alongside the rest of these texts;
• to track possible differences in translation techniques employed to translate Aristotelian fragments vs. Aristotelian major works;
• to sketch the role of commentaries as possible sources of pseudoaristotelica;
• to highlight the reuse or repurposing of Aristotelian concepts within religious controversies and debates;
• to paint Aristotle’s profile within different academic curricula.

Questo workshop internazionale riunisce studiose e studiosi nel campo degli studi siriaci, arabi e armeni per discutere la ricezione e la traduzione delle opere e dei frammenti aristotelici. In particolare, si concentra sulle opere che vengono attribuite al filosofo greco, ma che sono in realtà pseudo-aristoteliche o spurie. Il workshop è organizzato nell'ambito del progetto ERC FragArist (Finanziato dall'Unione Europea – Horizon EUROPE ERC-2021-STG Progetto n. 101041826). Nasce dalla profonda convinzione che i frammenti aristotelici siano fondamentali per comprendere la filosofia aristotelica e il suo impatto complessivo sulle tradizioni filosofiche successive, spostando l'attenzione dalle opere più note del filosofo per offrire una nuova comprensione delle sue idee. Questa prospettiva deve tenere conto delle testimonianze offerte dalla ricezione delle opere del filosofo nell'Asia occidentale, che include le tradizioni siriaca, araba e armena. Un simile ampliamento delle prospettive di indagine apre la strada a ulteriori linee di ricerca, che si articolano negli obiettivi generali di questo workshop:

• identificare se i frammenti attribuiti ad Aristotele nascondano eventuali opere greche perdute del filosofo;
• riflettere sul motivo per cui un'opera, un frammento o una raccolta di detti vengano attribuiti ad Aristotele (piuttosto che ad altri);
• rilevare la presenza di frammenti o estratti aristotelici nelle letterature siriaca, araba e armena;
• verificare se questi frammenti siano stati tradotti singolarmente, o se appartenessero a opere più ampie e siano stati tradotti insieme al resto di questi testi;
• rintracciare le possibili differenze nelle tecniche impiegate per tradurre i frammenti aristotelici rispetto alle opere principali di Aristotele;
• delineare il ruolo dei commentari come possibili fonti di testi pseudo-aristotelici (pseudoaristotelica);
• evidenziare il riuso o il riadattamento dei concetti aristotelici all'interno di controversie e dibattiti religiosi;
• tracciare il profilo di Aristotele all'interno dei diversi curricula accademici.
