DiSSGeA Visiting Scholars Programme

The Department of Historical and Geographic Sciences and the Ancient World (DiSSGeA) welcomes scholars and researchers to participate in its Visiting Scholars Programme throughout the year. This programme is aimed at self-funded scholars in established posts at other universities or similar academic institutions who are on study leave or have received authorisation by their home institution to spend a period abroad.

General information

  Duration

Visiting Scholars generally spend between one month and one year in Padua

  Included in the programme

  • assistance by an academic in the Department as well as by International administrative staff
  • attendance at lectures and seminars organised by the Department
  • opportunity to be invited as a speaker within the Department and the MoHu Centre seminar series
  • Wi-Fi internet access
  • access to the University's library facilities
  • access to digital resources through Galileo Discovery

  Not included in the programme

  • dedicated office, telephone line, and secretarial services
  • printing facilities (available at the libraries upon payment)
  • healthcare insurance
  • remuneration

Usually Visiting Scholars are not granted a University badge or a @unipd.it email address. For stays above 90 days you may request these additional services, that will be evaluated by the Department on a case-by-case basis.

Applications

  How to apply

If you wish to submit an application you should first contact an academic of the Department who will assist you during your stay.

Applications are considered throughout the year and should be addressed to the Department International Research Office at international.dissgea@unipd.it

Your application should include:

  • a completed application form;
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • copy of ID/Passport
  • an official document from the home institution authorising the visiting period at DiSSGeA

  Selection process

Applications are evaluated by the Department Research Committee within 15 working days from submission.

If your application is successful, you will receive an official letter of invitation signed by the Head of Department. If your letter of invitation needs to include any specific details (such as for visa request or to receive funds from your home institution), please contact international.dissgea@unipd.it.

Accommodation

The University of Padua offers visiting scholars the opportunity to apply for accommodation in dedicated guesthouses. Although simple and plain, these lodgings are comfortable and generally well-appreciated.

Entry procedures, visas and residence permits

Procedures differ according to your nationality (European or non-European) and the length of your stay (more or less than 90 days). For further information please see the dedicated section on the University of Padua's website.

Tax code

The Italian tax code (codice fiscale) is an alphanumeric code used by Italian authorities to identify individuals. It is essential for signing contracts, opening a bank account, and accessing many public services (including healthcare). If you stay in Padua for more than 90 days, the Department will request the tax code on your behalf, free of charge.

Welcome to Padua

The University offers a unique learning and teaching environment that is closely intertwined with the town and its layout. Its campus is spread thorughout the town, and students account for over 30% of the local population. The four Department buildings (Palazzo Luzzatto Dina, Palazzo Wollemborg, Palazzo Liviano, Beato Pellegrino-ex IRPEA) are located in the centre of Padua, within walking distance of the main historic landmarks - find out more.

Collect your Welcome Kit

Come say “Hi”! The Department International Office will contact you to schedule an appointment in the first few days of your stay, so that you can collect your Welcome Kit and, in case of need, provide you with additional information.

Insurance

The Department will pay on your behalf a mandatory insurance fee to cover accidents in the Department’s premises. Please note that this is not equivalent to healthcare insurance.

Libraries

The University provides its students and staff with a University Library System, which includes a vast bibliographic and informative heritage accessible from both university libraries and through a digital library. The following Humanities libraries are located in the Department buildings:

Healthcare services

International researchers at the University of Padua can access healthcare services by registering to the National Health Service (NHS). Registration to the the NHS is voluntary, valid for one calendar year (from 1 January to 31 December) and requires the payment of a registration fee - find out more

  At the end of your stay

If you received a temporary badge or office keys, please return them to the Department Front Office by the end of your stay.

If you need a certificate of stay, please contact international.dissgea@unipd.it providing a draft with the necessary information.
